EMS 10: Innovators in EMS Award

The EMS 10 Innovators in EMS Award recognizes ten individuals each year who are models of quality service and have taken great risks in an effort to advance the art and science of pre-hospital emergency care.

The mission of the EMS 10 Innovators in EMS program is to identify and recognize innovators in the EMS industry and alert the EMS community to their achievements from the previous year to help providers and patients of the future. The EMS 10 Innovators in EMS program is jointly sponsored by Physio-Control and JEMS. The award allows the industry to hear about the programs that EMS leaders and innovators have developed and implemented that are making a true difference in education, operation, prevention and clinical practice. Candidates are nominated by their peers who recognized the true value of their work and contributions to EMS.

A dinner and award ceremony to celebrate these individuals and groups was held in Washington, D.C. on March 6, 2013.

AHA Heart of Gold Honoree

The Heart of Gold Ball raises funds that support the American Heart Association’s mission to build healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Monies raised at the gala fund research, educational programs and community outreach efforts. The event honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of cardiovascular disease prevention and have enhanced the welfare of the region. The community honoree for the Greater Bay Area in 2012 was PulsePoint Foundation President Richard Price.

The Heart of Gold Ball was held on Saturday June 2, 2012 at Wente Vineyards in Livermore and kicked-off National CPR and AED Awareness Week for the American Heart Association.

The United States Congress designated the first week of June each year as “National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Week” with the goal of encouraging states, cities and towns to institute programs such as PulsePoint, to reduce death and disability from sudden cardiac arrest through increased citizen engagement.

On April 10, 2012, in New York City, the PulsePoint app received the prestigious honor of being selected as a Webby Nominee by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS). The mobile application was recognized in the Best Use of GPS or Location Technology category.

Hailed as the “Internet’s highest honor” by the New York Times, the Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet including Websites, Interactive Advertising, Online Film & Video and Mobile. The Webby has been awarded to such notable organizations as Amazon.com, eBay, Yahoo!, iTunes and Google.

On October 11, 2011 the PulsePoint app was awarded the California Special Districts Association (CSDA) Innovative Program Award. The criteria for this award includes originality of program, tangible and positive results produced and a documented decrease in costs or a demonstrated improvement in quality of service without significantly increasing costs. Additionally, the program must be easily adaptable and serve as a best practices example for other organizations.

The California Special Districts Association (CSDA) is a 501c(6), not-for-profit association formed in 1969. CSDA provides education and training, insurance programs, legal advice, industry-wide litigation and public relations support, legislative advocacy, capital improvement and equipment funding, collateral design services, and, most importantly, current information that is crucial to a special districts management and operational effectiveness.

IAFC Fire Service Award For Excellence

On August 27, 2011 the PulsePoint app was recognized by the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and U.S. Safety Fire Technologies with the presentation of the Fire Service Global Award for Excellence. This top honor international award recognizes innovation and achievement in managing resources to reduce the loss of life and property from fire and other emergencies, Sudden Cardiac Arrest in this case. The award was presented to PulsePoint Chairman and Fire District Director Matt Stamey during Fire-Rescue International in Atlanta.

On June 20, 2011, at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C., the application was recognized with a 2011 Computerworld Honors Laureate Medal for Innovation for creating “the ability to alert CPR-trained volunteers via an iPhone if there’s a victim of sudden cardiac arrest near them, and where the victim and a nearby defibrillator are located, so they can start lifesaving efforts as rescue is dispatched.”

The Computerworld Honors Program, now in its 23rd year, aims to recognize those organizations which create and use information technology to promote and advance the public welfare, benefit society and change the world for the better.

On June 8, 2011 the Public Service Announcement (PSA) video designed to promote awareness and adoption of the mobile application District received two Telly Awards. One award was received in the Government Relations category and one award was received in the Public Service category. The video was shot in 4K 16:9 format using the Red Digital Cinema Camera and shown in local theaters before featured movies.

The Telly Awards honor the very best local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and work created for the Web.

On June 6, 2011, at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., the District was presented a VITA Wireless Samaritan Award for its mobile phone application development work that “exemplifies how wireless technology can been used for dramatic results in emergencies.” The location-aware phone application empowers everyday citizens to provide life-saving assistance to victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. The app aims to improve bystander CPR rates and public access AED usage through an innovative and new form of civic engagement. The award is presented by The Wireless Foundation in association with the CTIA.

Membership in the association includes wireless carriers and their suppliers, as well as providers and manufacturers of wireless data services and products.
